Regenerative Agriculture & Apiculture
Thistlerock Mead Company sits on a 130 acre regenerative flower farm and naturally-managed apiary in Albemarle County, Virginia. Regenerative agriculture is a conservation and rehabilitation-minded approach to food and farming systems, focusing on topsoil regeneration, increasing biodiversity, improving the water cycle, enhancing ecosystem services, which in turn strengthen the health and vitality of our community, trap harmful carbon emissions from our atmosphere and support climate resilience. We are rewilding meadows, actively stewarding our forest, and continuously working to better support the land that sustains us without the use of pesticides, chemicals, or tilling through our direct partnership with our sister company Wayflowering.
Our apiculture practice follows a similarly regenerative approach taking into account the wellbeing of both our honey bees and native pollinators alike. We follow guidance from the national regenerative apiculture working group and the Pollinator Partnership , using only natural treatments for mites and invasive species, ensuring the bees can thrive off their own honey supply and, as a non-interventionist practice, providing supplementary feedings only when the survival of the hive is in severe jeopardy. We provide abundant forage for our bees at our home farm through intentional plantings and meadow restoration and we work with our partnering land owners that host our other bee yards to do the same.
